Experience & Education Required (any one of the following):

1. Masters degree from accredited nurse practitioner program and three (3) years as registered nurse in related field. One (1) year of nurse practitioner experience preferred. **Current Tx license with with recognition by BNE as advanced practice nurse. National nurse practitioner certification required.** BCLS and ACLS required.

Security This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code §51.215, which authorizes UT Southwestern to obtain criminal history record information.
 Job Duties 1. Obtains relevant and complete history and performs appropriate physical exam. Ninety percent of H&Ps will be dictated within 4 hours of patient's admission.

2. Orders and interprets appropriate diagnostic testing with fiscal accountability. Provides examples in which cost savings were achieved through change in testing practices.

3. Analyzes data to formulate diagnosis or diagnoses. Ensures that chart reviews demonstrate complete list of diagnoses on all pro- gress notes.

4. Selects appropriate pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions with cost awareness for both patient and hospital. Provides evidence showing that medication changes were made by NP which resulted in overall patient and hospital savings.

5. Provides on-going patient education with regard to procedures, medications, treatment plan and follow-up care. Ensures that appropriate medication literature is provided to our patients.

6. Expedites patient discharge by monitoring length of stay and timely completion of discharge instructions and dictation of discharge summaries. Completes ninety percent of all discharge summaries within 72 hours following discharge.

7. Makes appropriate referrals based on patient priorities. Arranges for follow-up care and home care. Initiates discharge planning upon patient's arrival to hospital as evidenced by chart review.

8. Maintains and continuously updates order sheets and forms used in program areas. Evaluates, revises as necessary and redesigns NP protocols in conjunction with physician sponsor on annual basis.

9. Provides education to staff, in form of inservices, at least three (3) times per year. Mentors staff and does frequent, informal teaching using plan of care as dynamic tool. Functions as precep- tor for at least two (2) nurse practitioner students.

10. Reviews own charts and charts of NP peers for quality review. Monitors nursing care on on-going basis as round on patients. Gives frequent feedback to managers. Provides example of change in nursing practice related to NP input, i.e., own knowledge, current research, etc.

11. Forumulates plan based on priority issues for patient and family. Ensures that chart reviews reveal on-going attention to plan and outcome on all patients.

12. Performs other duties as assigned.
