Experience & Education Required (any one of the following):

1. High School diploma, or equiv., and four (4) yrs exp. working with animals in a clinical or research setting, or two (2) yrs working as a Vet. Technician I, or AA degree in Lab Animal Sci. or related field. Must be LAT certified by the American Assoc. of Lab. Animal Sci. (AALAS), or obtain cert. within one (1) yr of employment.

Security This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code §51.215, which authorizes UT Southwestern to obtain criminal history record information.
 Job Duties 1. Work under limited supervision to provide technical assistance to veterinary medical or research staff in delivering health care, including veterinary medicine, surgery, and radiology, to laboratory animals.

2. Assist the ARC veterinary staff to provide research and health care support for a wide variety of species. Able to routinely work in the animal facility without direct supervision.

3. Perform physical examinations under the general supervision of Animal Resource Center (ARC) veterinarians. Maintain animal health and study related records as required by the IACUC and ARC policy.

4. Administer and monitor general anesthesia to various small and mid-sized animal species. Perform minor surgical procedures and assist with major surgical procedures.

5. Perform routine diagnostic testing utilizing common laboratory equipment. Work comfortably in a microbiological barrier facility as well as ABSL-2 and ABSL-3 containment areas.

6. Obtain routine blood collections from research animals. Perform antigen injections and sample collections for antibody production in research animals.

7. Expose and develop radiographs for a variety of species.

8. Maintain appropriate medical records as required. Assist in maintaining surveillance of investigator research protocols.

9. Participate in University mandated training such as MRI, Radiation Safety and Blood Borne Pathogens.

10. Provide guidance and training to animal care staff and investigators in proper animal handling and restraint, behavior, anatomy, blood and tissue collection, surgical techniques, and dosing methods.

11. Perform other duties as assigned.
